Holland, Macarenas and the four-cub chair trick
Tonight was a very busy evening at Cubs with lots of changes, lots of fun learning about a country other than where we live and trying the four-person chair trick! We have FUN in Cubs 🙂
After opening, with the Cubs remaining in “horse-shoe”, we watched as 2 Patrol Leaders from the Scout Troop, Taylor and Corrinne came over and collected 6 Cubs who were starting their Moving On journey into the next Section and more everyday adventure! We’ll miss Joseph R, Joseph B, Grace K, Josh S, Sammy R and Daniel N… a cadre of expereince and well developed young people, but are proud that several of them achieved the Chief Scout’s Silver Award during their time in the Cub Pack.
After they’d Moved On to the Scout Troop we also had a swap whereby Taylor, one of the Senior Patrol Leaders and Moving on from the Scout Troop herself, joined the Cub Pack as a Young Leader! In return our YL, Dizzy is moving to the Scout Troop to help out there…
With the departure of these Cubs (onto bigger and better things!) we then had a gap in the pack for several Seconders and Sixers. The first order of business though was to move the young people around in the Pack between Sixes. I told each of them one at a time who was going to be in which Six and then asked them to swap woggles with each other so they ended up with the right colored woggle.
Whilst this was taking place, 3 young people who were new to Cubs – and Scouting – had a chat with Raksha who talked to them about what it was all about, these funny names, the scout sign, the Promise and Law, etc. We’re planning on doing this for the next few weeks before, hopefully, formally investing these young people into the Cub Pack!
Because the theme of tonight was Learning about a country other than your own (from the Global Challenge badge), and because our chosen country was the Netherlands, we imagined that we would need to get on a ferry to go to this country … so we played a brief game that the Cubs had enjoyed the week before – “Ships” or “Galley Quarterdeck”.
After letting the Cubs burn off some energy on this game, I setup the projector and my laptop. I put the Haarlem Jamborette website on the screen and showed the Cubs the map of where participants to this camp were coming from. The Cubs had a go trying to find where Haarlem, and then us, South Leeds and Morley were on the map. Over the half term I had set each Cub a little task to answer a question about Holland and then find another interesting fact about it – you can see some of their answers in the comments on that page and so they also presented what they’d found out and we looked a few of the answers up on Google and used Street View to see them!
I then showed the Pack a video of Scouts at Haarlem Jamborette 2011 doing the Macarena Dance and our Cubs had great fun joing in!
Just before closing, we tried a challenge I had been set by the District Comissioner! To see if our Cubs could make a four-person chair… without the chairs 🙂 I think they did very well… though we may try this again because we enjoyed doing it that much!
In closing, Louie G presented his WWE figures collection for his Collectors Badge, and Louis M showed us his motor-cycle gear for his Sports Enthusiast badge. Harry also talked to us briefly about his lego models going towards his Creative Challenge Badge.
Wow… feels like we fit a lot into tonight! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, Cubs 🙂
Awards: Loads of badges handed out tonight! 🙂 Jacob H received his Promise Challenge Badge… and was promoted to Sixer. The following Cubs were promoted to Seconder: Henry U, Oliver D, Louis M, Harry A and Imogen S. Harry B and Abi R received their 2 year badge and Louis M got his Staged Musician 1 badge. – Very Well done everyone!
