Toilet Twinning and Treasure hunting

26 June 2014

371801292405265_Toilet_Twinning_logo_256_x_127Tonight was our second part of Toilet Twinning where we asked the Cubs to bring back their fundraising boxes so we could tot up how much they’d raised so far as see if we were going to get to our £60 target – if we reach this amount we’re going to twin one of the toilet’s in the church 🙂 Keep reading below to see how we did…

(Toilet Twinning Part 1 here: Poo as far as the eye can see)

So, after opening as usual we split the Cub Pack – which is getting pretty big now with frequently well over 20 cubs each Thursday evening! – into three groups and then rotated them around each activity run by a couple of leaders.

The first group started in the hall with Akela, and their initial task was to start counting up what the Cubs had brought in in their Toilet Twinning Fundraising  boxes.

The second group went with Oo, starting at the front of the Church with some basic compass instructions – which I put together whilst not at the Church… with the help of Google Compass!

Stand at the front main entrance to church facing North

  1. What is the [building] you are looking at? (Doctors Surgery)
  2. What is immediately to the West of you? (main road – A61)
  3. What direction is Millennium Green in from where you are? (Due South / South East)
  4. Standing immediately outside the door to the church basement, what bearing (direction) is the car park in (north)
  5. FROM that door, what compass bearings do you need to following to walk CLOCKWISE around the church, coming back to where you are? (East, South, West, North, East)

I took the 3rd group with Juliet one of our newest parents to help out regularly with the running of the Pack. The activity was a bit like a treasure hunt — shortly before the start of the meeting I had hidden 10 playing cards around the ground of the church – and then noted a basic compass bearing  from one to the next for the Cubs to follow:

Ace of hearts – (hint: brown bin)
Jack diamonds – go South (hint high)
Queen diamonds – continue south (hint: bench)
Ten hearts – go NE (hint: door)
King hearts – go SW (hint: grave)
Jack hearts – go W (hint: bottom wall)
Queen hearts – go SE (hint: bottom fence – purple flowers)
Ten diamonds – go north east (hint: drain at back door)
Ace diamonds – go SE (hint: grave)
King diamonds – go NW (hint: wall front path)

The cubs seemed to quite enjoy this activity… though, after working out where North was initially, they were clever to then guesstimate where the other directions were without really referring to their compasses again.

Each group rotated through these activities so that all the Cubs had a turn.

fundraisingBack in the hall at the end we found out what the total was we’d raised so far for Toilet Twinning – an amazing £38.73! So we’re we’ll on our way to the £60 we’re looking to raise!

Thank you all for your efforts so far… lets see if we can get the difference in for next week?
