8th Carlton take part in Morley’s St George’s Day Parade
This Blog entry courtesy of Sara “Oo”, Assistant Cub Scout Leader who got invested during the Parade along with Assistant Scout Leader Graham “Bald Eagle” – well done both!
“I was really looking forward to the parade this year and felt it was an important step in my role as a Sectional Assistant working with the Cub Pack at 8th SLaM.
There are two days a year that we wear our best uniforms and parade publicly with pride and it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the past and to reaffirm our commitment to Scouting once more.
Today turned out quite nicely with the weather and we were blessed to see sunshine put in an appearance as we started to assemble on Queen Street in Morley.
We were allocated our places in the procession and given small England flags to wave to the crowds as we marched.
There was a regimental band to lead the procession and as the music started playing they set off marching.
The first main task as we made our way along Queen Street was to look left and smile to the dignitaries who were assembled on the Morley Town Hall steps and these even included The Lord Mayor of Leeds who smiled and waved back to everyone!
Crowds lined to the route all the way past Morley Leisure Centre and onto Scatcherd Lane towards the Rugby Ground and once we were inside the ground the was full of cheering and flag waving people caught up in the excitement of the event.
Once assembled on the pitch in our relevant sections all members of the Scouting family were invited to renew their promises (Beaver, Cub & Scout) and I was presented with my official Necker from Akela because I am now an Assistant Cub Scout Leader.
We then did a final parade across the front of the stand and the watching crowds and were dismissed and free to then enjoy the family fun day with our own families who had come along to watch.
All in all it was a great day out and a pleasure to be there representing everyone from 8th SW Leeds and Morley (Carlton) Group”

Cubs attending today’s Parade have had this credited towards their Hikes Away Staged Badge and towards their Promise Challenge Badge.
Wonderful day
Great to see the Cubs and Leaders looking so proud. As well as all the parents grandparents and friends who marched with us
Happy to present Oo with her red and white necker and badges as part of 8th Carlton Cub Pack along with Keego receiving her red necker before we set off.
Lots of reminiscing too with parents whose children are now in Cubs who came two years ago on a very wet but enjoyable event. Character building stuff.
Maybe we can arrange to staff a fund raising stall next year any takers!
[…] This Thursday, the first meeting back after at Cubs it was a St George’s-themed evening as it was St George’s Day the day before, 23rd April (and we also found out it is Shakespear’s Birthday!) and in preperation for St George’s activities and Parade at the weekend. You can the Cubs taking part in the Parade here […]
