Oo's Blog!

How well do I know where I live…?

6 March 2014

Tonight at Cubs we were seeing how much “Local Knowledge” we had of where we live / do much of our Scouting in South Leeds!

Local Knowledge

The Cubs played the “Compass” game with Dizzy to burn off a bit of energy whilst I briefed the team on the nights plan…

Local Knowledge - map of our area

After each “Six” studying the Map above (they were given an A3 laminated copy each), they were then asked to locate several places based on a grid reference.

Whilst the Cubs were doing this, Akela and I set out a version of the map on the basement floor using different coloured ropes (unfortunately we didn’t have any blue ropes for the motorways 😉 )  for the main roads show and train lines, etc. I then had the Cubs come round the floor “map” and helped them to visualise it. We talked about what was at the end of the M1 / M62 motorways and then I called out various Map locations, e.g. Church, School, Sports Center, Train Station… the idea being the Cubs worked in their Sixes to look at their A3 maps to locate the particular item I’d called out first – they then went and placed the item on the larger floor map to see if we all agreed.

Awards: Dan N received his Hikes Away 10 Staged Activity Badge; Joseph R received his Swimmer 2 Staged Activity Badge; Louis G and Sam F both were awarded their Chef Badges! Sam F completed is Swimmer 3 Staged Activity Badge; Sammy R his Swimmer 1; Sam E his Swimmer 1, Chef and Book Reader badges and Josh W his his Swimmer 2 badge. Well done everyone  🙂

After just 2 days of voting for Sara’s new “Jungle Book” name we received at least 26 votes and so tonight we bestowed upon her…. Oo (the Turtle!)
